How Nigerian Army Arrests Four IPOB Members, Destroys 23 Illegal Refineries in Niger Delta

The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army has apprehended 25 suspected oil thieves, including four individuals believed to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The operation, which took place between January 12 and 19, 2025, also led to the dismantling of 23 illegal refining sites and the recovery of over 45,000 liters of stolen petroleum products in the Niger Delta region.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Port Harcourt, Lt. Col. Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, detailed the operations that led to the arrests and destruction of illegal oil refining infrastructure in Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, and Imo states. The Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, has been actively combating economic sabotage and criminal activities in the region.

According to the statement, the arrests took place in Delta State, particularly in Oshimili Local Government Area, where four IPOB members were apprehended. In addition, multiple illegal refining operations were deactivated, with stolen products being recovered in significant quantities. The operation also led to the destruction of illegal refining sites, boats, and equipment used in the illicit oil trade.

The statement further outlined the following key outcomes:

In Rivers State, over 15,000 liters of stolen oil were intercepted, and multiple illegal refining sites were dismantled.

In Imo State, 13 illegal refineries were destroyed, with more than 7,000 liters of stolen petroleum products recovered.

In Bayelsa State, two vehicles carrying stolen Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) were seized, while more illegal refining sites were deactivated.

The Army also conducted operations in Akwa Ibom State to maintain operational readiness against criminal activities in the region.

Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding the 6 Division, commended the troops for their success and urged them to intensify their efforts. He also emphasized the need to prevent criminal groups, especially IPOB members, from gaining a foothold in the Niger Delta. The Army is committed to continuing its crackdown on illegal oil activities and ensuring the safety and stability of the region.
