How Trader Wearing Earpiece Dies After Being Hit by Train in Oshodi, Lagos
A tragic incident occurred in Lagos on Friday when a trader was fatally struck by a Lagos-Ibadan train near Oshodi. The accident, which took place around 2pm, caused panic as onlookers and passers-by gathered at the scene.
Witnesses reported that the middle-aged man, who was wearing an earpiece in both ears, was standing on the railway tracks while urinating. Despite the train’s loud horn and bystanders shouting warnings, the man did not hear them due to his earpiece and was hit by the train in front of Arena Shopping Complex.
Several witnesses who gathered around the body after the accident suggested that the victim’s failure to heed the warnings led to his death. One individual identified the man as a trader with a shop in Moyosore Shopping Complex, stating that he had been talking on the phone with three others while walking along the tracks. The other three individuals heard the train horn and quickly ran for safety, but the man did not react in time.
The deceased’s body was found near his closed shop, and efforts were made to notify his family. Authorities were called to the scene to remove the body, while attempts were made to reach his relatives.
Reports indicate that train-related accidents have become increasingly common in the Lagos area due to heavy pedestrian activity on the rail tracks. Traders, especially in areas like Agbado, Agege, Ikeja, and Oshodi, often set up their stalls on or near the tracks, only moving their goods when a train approaches, putting their lives in danger.
A source from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the accident but said the victim’s identity had not been disclosed. As of the time of reporting, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Lagos Police Command, Ben Hundeyin, had not responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
