Ighodalo: Will He Truly Continue Obaseki’s Legacy?”
“Ighodalo: Will He Truly Continue Obaseki’s Legacy?”
Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, pledged to advance the infrastructure projects initiated by outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki. Speaking at the launch of the PDP’s statewide campaign in Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area, Ighodalo also committed to supporting farmers with incentives and offering scholarships to students across the state.
Ighodalo criticized the current economic situation and acknowledged Obaseki’s efforts to shield Edo residents from the Federal Government’s economic challenges. He stated, “We are prepared to continue from where Governor Obaseki left off. He has laid a solid foundation, and we will build upon it. The progress made over the past eight years will soon become apparent, and while we may miss the governor in the near future, Ogie and I will strive to uphold his achievements.”
He highlighted improvements in security under Obaseki’s administration, stating, “Before, it was unsafe to leave your home at 2 a.m., but under Obaseki, things improved. We will continue to enhance security and address the issues facing Edo State.”
Ighodalo assured that his administration would oversee the state with a dedicated situation room and enhance initiatives like EdoBEST. He also promised continued support for agriculture, including incentives for cassava and oil palm farmers, noting Edo’s leadership in oil palm production under Obaseki.
Governor Obaseki praised Ighodalo’s dedication, emphasizing their long-standing relationship and Ighodalo’s sacrifice in leaving his legal career to run for governor. Obaseki remarked, “Ighodalo’s decision to enter the race is a significant sacrifice, driven by his commitment to serving the people rather than personal gain.”
Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, endorsed Ighodalo, contrasting him with the opposition candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo. Agbebaku stated, “Ighodalo is intellectually superior, with a wealth of ideas, unlike others who may only have a ‘loading brain’.”
