IGP Egbetokun’s Appointment Valid and Legal – Police Respond to Sowore’s Claims

The Nigeria Police Force has formally addressed and refuted recent claims made by Mr. Omoyele Sowore regarding the legality of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun’s tenure. The police force categorically denies the allegations, describing them as baseless and misleading.

According to the Police Force, IGP Egbetokun’s appointment is fully in line with the law, specifically under PART III, Section 7 (6) of the Police Act, 2020 (as amended). This section clearly states that the Inspector-General of Police is to serve a term of four years, and Egbetokun’s appointment has been properly confirmed by the Police Council. His tenure, officially validated by a confirmation letter from the Presidency, is set to run from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2027.

The statement further clarifies that recent amendments to the Police Act (Section 8A) emphasize the stability and continuity of leadership within the police force, enabling the IGP to implement long-term reforms without the threat of abrupt removal. This adjustment aims to improve the operational effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Nigeria Police also noted that IGP Egbetokun’s status as the 22nd Indigenous Inspector-General of Police is legally sound, and Sowore’s remarks are viewed as an attempt to create confusion and erode public trust in the force’s leadership. The police force strongly warned against the spread of such unfounded claims, urging citizens to refrain from disseminating disinformation that could undermine national security.
In conclusion, the Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and called for constructive dialogue that supports the mission of maintaining peace and order in the country.
