IPOB Lawyer Cautions Supporters: “Without Political Backing, Kanu’s Appeal Is Dead on Arrival”

In a fresh wave of tension surrounding the legal battle of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, one of the group’s legal representatives has issued a stern warning to supporters, urging them to avoid emotional or reactionary responses as the case enters a critical phase. The lawyer emphasized that without solid political intervention, Kanu’s ongoing appeal risks being “dead on arrival.”

Speaking during a weekend briefing, the lawyer lamented the rising pressure from sympathizers who expect quick judicial relief, insisting that the reality of Nigeria’s political-legal landscape requires more than court filings and courtroom arguments.

According to him, Kanu’s case has evolved beyond a mere legal contest and now sits firmly within the realm of political negotiation. He stressed that expecting a favourable judgment without corresponding political will amounts to “wishful thinking,” noting that previous court victories for Kanu were either ignored or countered by higher state actions.

He cautioned supporters not to misinterpret court appearances or procedural steps as signs of progress, explaining that the appeal process demands strategic engagement, patience, and wider political backing. The lawyer also appealed for calm across the South-East, stating that heightened agitation or emotional outbursts could undermine ongoing efforts to secure a fair outcome.

“People must understand that this is no longer about legal brilliance alone,” he said. “The system has shown, time and time again, that political leverage plays a defining role. Without it, any appeal—no matter how strong—risks being dead on arrival.”

He further highlighted the necessity of building alliances, engaging key stakeholders, and maintaining open channels with influential political actors who can shape decisions at the federal level. The lawyer insisted that the priority should be creating an environment where lawful resolution is possible, rather than escalating tensions with the government.

Kanu, who has been in custody since his re-arrest in 2021, continues to attract domestic and international attention. While his supporters remain optimistic, the lawyer’s remarks suggest that a sober reassessment of strategy may be needed as the legal process drags on.

The counsel concluded by reassuring supporters that the legal team remains committed to securing justice for Kanu but reiterated that emotional reactions or pressure campaigns will not substitute for the political momentum required to drive meaningful change.

As the appeal awaits decisive hearings, observers note that the coming months will determine whether the push for Kanu’s freedom transforms into a political breakthrough—or faces yet another frustrating setback.
