JAMB is The Global Leader in ICT for Exams, Says Registrar Oloyede

The registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has proclaimed that JAMB stands as the largest user of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) globally. He highlighted that Nigeria uniquely conducts entrance examinations for over 2 million candidates simultaneously, a feat unmatched by any other nation.
During a press briefing at the 2024 International Week and 17th Annual Research Conference at the University of Lagos, themed “Inclusive Digital Transformation and the University Promise,” Oloyede emphasized that countries like the United States, United Kingdom, and India fall short in comparison to Nigeria’s ICT utilization.
He remarked, “JAMB is the largest user of ICT for registration and examination worldwide. It’s hard to grasp that nowhere else do we conduct entrance exams for such a massive number of candidates at once—only in Nigeria. While we are constitutionally federal, our operations resemble a more centralized system.”
Oloyede elaborated on how JAMB employs ICT throughout the registration process, incorporating both preventative and investigative measures to ensure integrity. The board conducts computer-based tests for approximately 2 million candidates, reflecting its commitment to digital transformation. He assured that the admissions process is automated and fair, with the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) ensuring equitable treatment for all candidates.
He also addressed the need for caution when using artificial intelligence, warning against the reliability of online information. “While AI tools like ChatGPT can be useful, they are not always accurate. I tested it myself, and found significant inaccuracies,” he stated. Oloyede concluded by stressing the importance of combining artificial intelligence with human judgment to navigate the digital landscape effectively.
