JUSUN Issues 21-Day Ultimatum to FG Over ₦70,000 Minimum Wage and Judicial Autonomy

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has given the federal government a 21-day deadline to begin industrial action if the ₦70,000 minimum wage and financial autonomy for the judiciary are not implemented. This announcement was made following the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, where they expressed concern over the lack of progress in fulfilling these demands.
While JUSUN acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s signing of the new minimum wage bill, which raised the national minimum wage to ₦70,000, the union emphasized the need for more decisive financial measures to ease the economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
The union also recognized states that have begun to implement the new minimum wage but urged others that have not yet complied to do so without delay. They expressed dissatisfaction with the federal government’s failure to apply the 25%-35% salary increase and the ₦35,000 wage awards for judiciary workers, which were supposed to take effect in January 2024.
JUSUN’s ultimatum, which started on January 23, 2025, warns that if their demands are not met, judiciary workers will take action across the country. Additionally, the union criticized state governors for not honoring the constitutional provisions and court rulings regarding judicial financial autonomy, calling on them to act swiftly to protect the independence of the judiciary and uphold democratic principles.
