Kalu Declares: Tinubu to Win Over 70% of South-East Votes in 2027
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, expressed confidence on Friday that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will receive overwhelming support from the South-East in the 2027 general elections. Speaking at Ntalakwu in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, Kalu predicted that over 70% of votes from the region would go to Tinubu.
The assurance came during a grand reception hosted by the Atuma Grace Movement, a political platform founded by former lawmaker Chief Emeka Atuma, in Kalu’s honour. Kalu cited President Tinubu’s recent initiatives, especially the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), as a demonstration of his commitment to the advancement of Igbo communities.
Reflecting on historical injustices, Kalu recalled the unfulfilled post-civil war promises of reconstruction and integration made by the Gowon administration. He emphasized that, unlike his predecessors, Tinubu has taken decisive action by signing the SEDC bill into law and ensuring it receives funding—something no previous president had done for the region.
For his efforts, Kalu was conferred with the traditional title ‘Dike Eji Aga Mba’ (The People’s Warrior) by King Larry of Ntalakwu ancient kingdom. During the event, Kalu also welcomed several prominent political figures who defected from the Labour Party (LP) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Among them were retired Major Akubundu Awa, former Abia Assembly majority leader Chief Wisdom Ogbonna, community leader Chief Kingsley Uwa, and education official Chief Sir Uche Nwachukwu.
“No previous president has honored the commitment made to the Igbo people after the war like President Tinubu has,” Kalu said. “For over five decades, no government took that pledge seriously until now. The President’s actions show he genuinely cares about the development of Igboland.”
Kalu also criticized reports that traditional rulers in Abia were being discouraged from engaging with federal officials and supporting initiatives linked to the President, calling such actions undemocratic and contrary to the will of the people.
“We stand firmly behind a leader who respects and uplifts our region,” Kalu affirmed. “In return, we are prepared to give him 70 to 80 per cent of our votes in 2027.”
