Kano Family Struggles as They Rely on Begging for Survival: A Call for Local Government Action

In a recent TikTok video, Dr. Bello Galadanci, also known as Dan Bello, a US-born skitmaker and journalist from Kano State, has raised serious concerns about the hardships faced by vulnerable families in northern Nigeria.
Dr. Galadanci highlighted the dire conditions many families endure, describing them as impoverished, young, unwell, and uneducated, and struggling to afford basic necessities like housing.
He urged local governments to leverage their financial resources to support these families effectively.
“Local governments need to create mechanisms to identify and assist these families, addressing their fundamental needs and educational requirements,” he said.
Dr. Galadanci also emphasized the importance of transparency in these initiatives, urging local government chairpersons and councillors to ensure the program is free from corruption.
In a video shared online, a Kano family shared their distressing experience, underlining the immediate need for such interventions.
Aliyu and his sister Siyama, from Gwamaja in Kano State, shared their story. Their mother, who is blind, has been struggling since their father’s death over a year ago. They reported that they only manage to eat when they go out to beg, having received no support from local authorities or councillors.
This poignant testimony underscores the urgent need for local governments to take decisive action to support these vulnerable families.
