Kano Government Responds to Pressure Over Emir Sanusi’s Reinstatement

The administration of Kano State, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has affirmed that it will not succumb to any intimidation regarding its decision to dissolve the five emirates and reinstate Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Recent events in Kano have been marked by significant upheaval, following Governor Yusuf’s dismissal of five emirs and approval of a bill that empowered the Kano Emirate Council to reinstate former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi II, as emir. This situation has heightened tensions, leading to the deployment of security forces to maintain order.

During a weekend press conference in Kano, State Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo emphasized that the government’s decisions were legally grounded and resistant to external pressures. Gwarzo highlighted the administration’s commitment to the legal process and the greater good of Kano’s citizens.

Gwarzo underscored the administration’s dedication to the state’s foundational values of peace, justice, equality, tolerance, and hospitality. He stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence for Kano’s progress and political stability.

Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers from various political parties, united under the G-60 coalition, have urged the Federal Government to refrain from intervening in the emirate conflict. The lawmakers’ statement, signed by Obi Aguocha of the Labour Party (LP) and Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized that the emirate’s leadership issues are a matter for Kano State to resolve internally.

The G-60 coalition called for the Federal Government to respect Kano State’s authority and allow Emir Sanusi to govern without interference. They argued that federal involvement could disrupt the state’s peace and stability.

The lawmakers’ statement criticized the reported involvement of federal security
