Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Relieves Head of Service, Appoints Acting Successor

Abba Kabir Yusuf, governor of Kano State, has terminated the appointment of the state’s Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, in a move the administration says is aimed at revitalising the state’s civil service for enhanced efficiency and service delivery. The action took effect immediately, according to multiple Nigerian news reports.
The decision was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday evening by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin‑Tofa, and was widely covered by national media outlets including Vanguard and Punch.
Governor Yusuf said the dismissal forms part of broader administrative reforms designed to strengthen the civil service’s capacity, discipline and overall performance across government ministries and agencies. Officials said the governor believes the changes will enhance operational focus and better align the bureaucracy with the policy priorities of his administration.
Musa has been directed to hand over the affairs of his office by Wednesday, March 11, 2026, to Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, the Permanent Secretary in charge of Administration and General Services at the Cabinet Office, who has been named as Acting Head of Service pending the appointment of a substantive replacement.
In the official statement, Governor Yusuf thanked the outgoing Head of Service for his years of service and contributions to Kano’s public administration, wishing him well in future endeavours. “We wish him the best in his future endeavours and pray for his continued success in all aspects of life,” the governor said.
The administrative change comes amid broader realignments within the Kano State government, following Governor Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has seen shifts across some political and civil service roles.
Political analysts note that the move reflects a continued effort by the Yusuf administration to strengthen institutional effectiveness and align bureaucratic leadership with evolving governance priorities in the state.
