KWAM 1 Told to Prove Royal Lineage Before Contesting for Awujale Throne

The Fusengbuwa ruling house of Ijebu-Ode—next in line to present the new Awujale of Ijebuland—has asked Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1, to formally verify his royal ancestry before he can be considered in the selection process.
Speaking with *Sunday PUNCH*, the chairman of the Fusengbuwa ruling house, Abdulateef Owoyemi, said that only confirmed members of the family will be allowed to contest for the revered throne. His comments followed a letter dated December 3, 2025, in which KWAM 1 declared interest in succeeding the late monarch, describing himself as a legitimate son of the ruling house in line with Ijebu tradition and the Ogun State Chieftaincy Laws.
The letter, which circulated widely online, generated significant public debate.
Owoyemi explained that the first requirement for any contender is to complete the Fusengbuwa royal lineage data form. The document demands a detailed tracing of one’s genealogy across seven generations to ensure that only genuine descendants participate in the selection and to prevent unrelated individuals from claiming royal ties.
He said the form must include full names, parental and grandparental links, and a clear ancestral path up to seven generations. Once filled, it will be submitted to the appropriate family head for verification before a contender can purchase the expression of interest form.
Although the application deadline closed on December 5, Owoyemi confirmed that KWAM 1 has been granted an additional five-day grace period, ending December 10, to submit the required documentation.
He stressed that the ruling house welcomes all qualified princes, including influential figures, but insisted that legitimacy must first be proven. “Every right comes with responsibility,” he said, noting that the family is committed to preserving the integrity of the throne.
Owoyemi also outlined the expected timeline for choosing the next Awujale. The local government has given the ruling house 14 days—ending December 18—to present shortlisted candidates. The kingmakers will then have seven days to select one nominee, whose name will be forwarded to the state governor.
According to him, the government will thereafter conduct background checks and allow time for objections before the State Executive Council ratifies the chosen candidate. Based on this process, the new Awujale is expected to emerge around the second or third week of January 2026, after which coronation rites will begin.
