Kwankwaso Defects to ADC, Sparks Talks of Obi Alliance Ahead of 2027 Elections

Kwankwaso Defects to ADC, Sparks Talks of Obi Alliance Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, is set to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), fueling speculation of a potential political alliance with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso, who officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) on Sunday, is expected to be received by ADC National Chairman, David Mark, and Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, alongside his close political associate, immediate past Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo. His move follows a series of strategic consultations, including a visit to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Abuja over the weekend.

In a statement announcing his exit from the NNPP, Kwankwaso described the decision as “difficult but necessary,” citing the need for political realignment in the country. “As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, it became necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he said. Kwankwaso thanked the NNPP leadership, including National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, as well as supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, for their contributions over the years.

Confirming the discussions, NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, told The PUNCH that a collaboration between Kwankwaso and Obi could generate a broader political movement. “If they are going to work together, there is bound to be a movement, either to the ADC, NNPP, or elsewhere. The full support of the Kwankwasiyya Movement will accompany Kwankwaso,” Johnson said.

Obi’s former campaign spokesman, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, also highlighted that the idea of a joint Obi-Kwankwaso ticket has gained traction among Nigerians. “It is obvious from public sentiment that the Obi-Kwankwaso pairing resonates with the people. If the opportunity arises, both leaders are willing to work together,” Tanko said, emphasizing that any new party registration is off the table due to time constraints.

The development comes after Obi, Kwankwaso, and other notable politicians, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson, visited Kano during the Sallah durbar festivities. The reception reportedly drew large crowds, reflecting grassroots enthusiasm. Both Kwankwaso and Obi’s teams have dismissed claims that supporters were mobilized through financial inducements. Tanko told The PUNCH, “Rented crowd? These people are funny. The kind of love shown to Obi was spontaneous and genuine. This was not orchestrated.”

Political analysts note that Kwankwaso’s defection and the emerging Obi alliance could reshape the opposition landscape in Nigeria, potentially consolidating fragmented votes and increasing competitiveness ahead of 2027. According to Channels TV and other media outlets, the move signals a broader trend among opposition leaders seeking unity to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The ADC, already gaining momentum with strategic defections and alliances, is now positioned to emerge as a key player in the opposition coalition, setting the stage for high-stakes political negotiations in the coming months.
