2027 Elections: Labour Party Says Presidential Ticket Open to All Aspirants
The leadership of the Labour Party has addressed recent media reports suggesting that the party is celebrating the announcement by its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of his intention to contest again under its platform in 2027.
In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party clarified that such reports misrepresent its stance and that comments made regarding Obi’s potential candidacy were taken out of context.
“We want to make it clear that while the party is open to any eligible Nigerian wishing to contest the 2027 elections under our banner, there is no provision for an automatic ticket,” the statement read.
The party emphasized that candidate selection will follow due process, as outlined in its constitution and internal guidelines. Ifoh also pointed out that the controversial decision during the 2024 National Convention, which initially offered automatic tickets to the party’s 2023 presidential candidate and its only sitting governor, has since been nullified after legal review.
The statement also expressed concern over Obi’s participation in a coalition meeting held in Abuja, reportedly without the knowledge or endorsement of the party leadership. “This action is both puzzling and troubling, as it suggests a lack of clarity on Obi’s part regarding his political intentions,” Ifoh said.
Reaffirming its position, the Labour Party stated it has no plans to enter any merger or coalition arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections. The party views Obi’s involvement in such activities as inappropriate and a direct challenge to the authority of the party’s leadership.
“We want to inform Nigerians and party members that the Labour Party’s presidential ticket for 2027 remains open. Any interested aspirant is welcome to contest, but no one, including Peter Obi, will receive special treatment or bypass the established nomination process,” the statement concluded.
