Lagos Government Responds to Peter Obi’s Remarks on Demolition of Structures

In a statement released by the Lagos State Ministry of Information, the government clarified that the demolitions were not targeted at any ethnic group, nor were they politically driven. According to the statement, the affected buildings violated existing planning and environmental regulations, including encroachment on drainage channels, road setbacks, and areas reserved for critical infrastructure.
“The Lagos State Government acts strictly in accordance with the law and city planning codes. Any property removed had been identified as being in violation of those regulations, and in many cases, multiple notices and warnings were issued prior to enforcement,” the statement read.
The government emphasized that Lagos, as a densely populated and rapidly growing megacity, must enforce its urban planning rules to prevent environmental hazards such as flooding and traffic congestion. It also noted that the demolitions were part of a broader effort to safeguard the integrity of public infrastructure and ensure the safety of all residents.
Reacting directly to Obi’s comments, the government urged public figures to verify facts before making public pronouncements. “We encourage national leaders to seek clarity and avoid inciting narratives that may mislead the public or inflame tensions. The Lagos Government serves all residents regardless of their ethnic background,” the statement concluded.
While the controversy has sparked heated debate on social media, many urban planners and civil society groups have echoed the need for consistent enforcement of planning laws, noting that irregular developments pose long-term risks to urban sustainability.
As discussions continue, the state government reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, equity, and lawful governance, assuring citizens that no group is being unfairly targ
eted.
