Lagos in Shock as Police Arraign Alleged Killer
Lagos, Nigeria – August 5, 2025 — Residents of Lagos have been left stunned as police arraigned a man alleged to be behind a brutal killing that rocked the state last month.
The suspect, identified as Abdulrasheed Umar, was brought before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where he faced charges relating to the premeditated murder of a 42-year-old businessman, Mr. Chuka Nwafor, in the Surulere area of Lagos.
According to the police prosecutor, ASP Grace Eze, the accused was contracted to carry out a “targeted killing,” allegedly linked to a business rivalry gone wrong. Investigators claim that Umar, believed to be a hired assassin, trailed Mr. Nwafor for several days before ambushing and fatally shooting him outside his residence on July 7th.
“The nature of this killing suggests careful planning and execution,” ASP Eze told the court. “Eyewitnesses reported that the assailant fled the scene swiftly, but CCTV footage and mobile tracking led to his arrest in Ogun State two weeks later.”
The arraignment sent shockwaves across the city, with many Lagosians expressing disbelief over the chilling details of the case. The courtroom was packed with journalists, family members of the victim, and concerned citizens, all eager for justice.
Though the charges were read in court, Umar has yet to enter a plea. The magistrate, Mrs. T.O. Oladele, ordered that he be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending further investigation. The case was adjourned to September 12, 2025, for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to issue legal advice.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has urged the public to remain calm and assured residents that no stone will be left unturned in uncovering the full details behind the murder.
“This is a reminder that the long arm of the law will always catch up with those who think they can commit heinous crimes and walk free,” said SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the command.
As Lagos grapples with rising concerns about violent crime, the arraignment serves as a critical step toward accountability—and a warning to those who operate in the
shadows.
