Lagos State Governor, Sanwo-Olu Racts to the Involvement in Mudashiru Obasa’s Impeachment

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has refuted claims of his involvement in the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Obasa was removed from office on Monday, January 13, 2025, following allegations of misconduct, corruption, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement. Thirty-two members of the Assembly voted in favor of his impeachment.
In a statement issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu clarified that the impeachment was solely a decision made by the Assembly, and the state government had no influence or participation in the process. “This is a legislative issue, and the Assembly took the necessary steps. The governor had no involvement in it,” Akosile said in an interview.
He also highlighted the importance of the principle of separation of powers, which ensures that the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary remain independent of one another.
Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015, faced multiple allegations that led to growing tension within the Assembly, contributing to his eventual removal. After his impeachment, Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker, was elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first woman to hold the position in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Although Governor Sanwo-Olu has not directly commented on Obasa’s tenure, sources indicate that he is eager to work more closely with the new leadership in the Assembly moving forward.
