Lagos Taskforce Arrests 62 People Sleeping on Streets in Midnight Raid

In the early hours of Friday, May 23, officials from the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce carried out a coordinated operation targeting street dwellers across the city. A total of 62 individuals—comprising 59 men and 3 women—were detained during the sweep, which aimed to address unauthorized occupation of public spaces.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development via a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account. He explained that the enforcement began around 1:30 AM in the Island area, focusing on locations like Victoria Island, Falomo, the Eko Hotel vicinity, Osborne, and surrounding neighborhoods—areas reportedly flagged for increased street habitation and safety concerns.
The Commissioner emphasized that the action is part of a broader initiative to enhance public safety and environmental cleanliness throughout Lagos. Authorities stated that the affected areas have since been cleared and restored to order, while those apprehended are set to face legal proceedings.
However, the operation has stirred debate online, especially after video footage from the raid circulated widely. While some support the government’s bid to keep public spaces orderly, others have criticized the approach, arguing that economic hardship has forced many onto the streets and that treating them like criminals lacks compassion and insight into the systemic issues at play.
