Lagos Tragedy: Truck Collision Claims Four Lives, Driver Flees Scene

A devastating road accident along the Lekki–Epe Expressway in Lagos State left four passengers dead and four others severely injured after a truck collided with a fully loaded commercial bus, authorities confirmed.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that the incident occurred over the weekend opposite Beechwood, Shapati, in the Ajah area. LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq said preliminary investigations suggest the driver of a HOWO truck, registered KNN 313 YL, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer into an oncoming Suzuki commercial minibus, locally called “Korope.”
“The driver of the articulated truck lost control while in motion and the truck veered uncontrollably across the carriageway, violently ramming into an oncoming commercial minibus,” Taofiq said. “The impact resulted in the immediate death of four male passengers, while four others two men and two women sustained severe fractures and were trapped in the wreckage.”
Emergency responders, including LASTMA personnel, passers-by, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), quickly arrived at the scene to extricate and provide medical attention to the injured. The victims were rushed to Hamon Royal Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Shency Hospital morgue.
Authorities confirmed that the truck driver and his aide fled the scene immediately after the crash. The Nigeria Police Force, attached to the Elemoro Division, secured the area to maintain order and assist in rescue operations. A comprehensive investigation into the incident has been launched to determine the exact cause.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, extending condolences to the families affected. He urged drivers, especially operators of large vehicles, to exercise caution and strictly adhere to traffic safety regulations.
The Lagos State roads have experienced multiple deadly accidents in recent weeks. PUNCH Metro previously reported a separate incident along the Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway in which a Volkswagen commercial bus accident claimed the life of a female passenger and left six others injuredaccording to The PUNCH.
The latest tragedy underscores ongoing concerns over road safety in Lagos and the urgent need for stricter traffic enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
