The Labour Party (LP), New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), and several other political parties under the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) have announced their withdrawal from the upcoming local government election in Osun State, scheduled for February 22, 2025.
Victor Akande, State Chairman of IPAC, made the announcement during a press conference in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.
The parties are protesting what they perceive as a bias by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) in favor of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
IPAC has accused OSSIEC of facilitating conditions for electoral malpractices in the forthcoming election.
The council also expressed doubts about the neutrality of OSSIEC Chairman, Barrister Ashim Abioye, citing his previous role as an appointee of the current PDP-led state government under Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Akande voiced disappointment over the lack of updates from the Commission regarding the election, contrary to expectations. He further alleged that the PDP in Osun State is intentionally creating a crisis atmosphere to intimidate and discourage voter participation.
