Malami Breaks Silence on INEC–ADC Dispute, Urges Calm Amid Political Tensions

Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has reacted to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) stance on the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the development as part of a broader political contest rather than a final verdict.

In a strongly worded statement circulating across political circles and reported by Daily Trust, Malami urged party members and supporters not to lose confidence, noting that INEC’s position reflects a cautious “wait-and-see” approach pending judicial resolution of the dispute between factions linked to David Mark and Nafiu Bala.

According to him, such developments are not unusual in Nigeria’s political landscape. He maintained that the unfolding situation should not be misinterpreted as a defeat for the opposition but rather as a temporary phase in a longer democratic process.

Malami also raised concerns about what he described as the increasing use of state institutions in political battles. As highlighted in commentary tracked by The Cable, he alleged that instruments of governance—including security agencies and financial influence—are being deployed to weaken opposition movements ahead of the 2027 elections.

He warned, however, that such tactics could have unintended consequences. “When people feel cornered, frustration builds, and that pressure does not remain silent forever,” he suggested, adding that political resistance appears to be growing across different regions of the country.

Addressing members of the ADC, Malami encouraged resilience, insisting that the party must remain focused despite the uncertainty. He also called for clarity within the party’s ranks, urging leaders to present verifiable evidence regarding internal processes, including claims of resignation by key officials.

Observers note that the remarks echo wider concerns within opposition circles about the independence of institutions and the health of Nigeria’s multi-party democracy. Coverage by Premium Times indicates that the ADC leadership tussle has become a focal point in discussions about political realignments ahead of the next general elections.

Malami further emphasised the importance of preserving democratic plurality, stressing that all political parties must be allowed to operate freely without undue interference. He argued that genuine electoral competition remains the cornerstone of Nigeria’s democratic system.

Despite his criticisms, the former minister expressed optimism that the judiciary would ultimately provide clarity on the dispute, reaffirming his belief that due process would prevail.

As political tensions continue to build, analysts say the ADC crisis may serve as an early test of institutional neutrality and the resilience of opposition alliances in the lead-up to 2027.
