Many Injured as Goods Worth Millions Lost in Enugu Market Attack by Unknown Gunmen
A violent attack by unidentified gunmen at the Nkwo Ibagwa market in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State has left many injured and caused significant destruction. The assailants, allegedly enforcing a sit-at-home order in honor of Biafra Heroes Day, struck on Wednesday, leading to substantial losses.
Reports indicate that the attackers set fire to at least two commercial buses and two tricycles, causing chaos and fear among traders. The aftermath revealed the charred remains of these vehicles and the ruined goods they carried, scattered throughout the market.
The incident has instilled fear among local residents and traders, who are now grappling with the extensive damage and loss of their livelihoods. In response, Enugu metropolis is experiencing heightened security with numerous military checkpoints established across major streets and roads, resulting in significant traffic congestion.
Armored Personnel Carriers have been deployed to key locations, including Emene, Eke-obinagu, Abakpa Junction, Trans-Ekulu, Garriki, Holy Ghost, Ogui Junction, and New Heaven Junction. This security presence aims to reassure the public that the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) will not be enforced and that their safety is a priority.
Efforts to obtain a statement from the Enugu State Command Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls regarding the incident.
