A masquerade recently captured the attention of a live audience after performing unexpected Gen Z–style dance moves to a traditional local rhythm. The energetic performance, which took place before a large crowd, drew cheers and applause, with many spectators showing appreciation by spraying the masquerade with money.
The video of the performance quickly went viral, sparking debate online. Some viewers criticized the dance as being out of place in a traditional Ekpo masquerade display, arguing that modern moves should not overshadow cultural heritage. Others, however, simply enjoyed the performance, seeing it as a fresh and entertaining twist on a classic tradition.
Masquerades in Nigeria are traditionally viewed as ancestral spirits or supernatural beings, revered across many ethnic groups, including the Igbo, Yoruba, and Ebira. Cultural norms often dictate that women avoid seeing or approaching masquerades, as their presence was historically considered inappropriate and disrespectful.
In recent years, however, these customs have become more relaxed. Women are now frequently seen near masquerades during performances, with some even joining in the dance or filming the event. This evolving dynamic reflects a blending of tradition and modernity in contemporary cultural celebrations.
