Massive 12.7mm Ammo Cache Recover in Maiduguri as Troops Intensify Hunt for Militants

Troops from Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have discovered a substantial cache of high-calibre ammunition in the Bulumkutu Railway area of Maiduguri, Borno State.

According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North East, the recovery was the result of sustained patrols and follow-up actions following a recent cordon-and-search operation. The previous operation had led to the neutralisation or capture of several suicide bombers.

On 2nd January 2026, at approximately 3:00 p.m., troops responded to a report of suspicious metallic objects in a drainage channel within the Bulumkutu Railway vicinity. Upon investigation, they recovered 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads, including live rounds, along with power banks concealed in the drainage.
No casualties or unusual incidents were reported during the operation. Security forces continue to maintain vigilance across the area, given the unpredictable threat environment.
HQ OPHK urged members of the public to remain alert and report any suspicious objects or movements to the authorities, emphasising that community cooperation is critical to maintaining peace and security in the North East.
