Messi Reveals Why He Turned Down Chance to Play for Spain
Argentine football icon Lionel Messi has opened up about one of the most pivotal decisions of his career — rejecting the opportunity to represent Spain at international level in favor of his homeland, Argentina.
Messi, who moved to Spain as a teenager to join the famed La Masia academy of FC Barcelona, was eligible to play for Spain after spending several formative years in the country. Having developed into one of the brightest young prospects in European football, the Spanish Football Federation reportedly expressed strong interest in integrating him into their national setup.
At the time, Spain was building a golden generation that would go on to dominate world football. For many players, the chance to be part of that squad would have been impossible to ignore. Yet for Messi, the decision was never purely about silverware or convenience.
Speaking about the moment, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner explained that his heart had always been set on representing Argentina. Despite receiving treatment and support in Spain during his early struggles with a growth hormone deficiency, Messi said his emotional connection to his birthplace remained unwavering.
“I always felt Argentine,” he said in reflection. “My dream as a child was to wear the Argentina jersey.”
True to that conviction, Messi made his senior debut for Argentina national football team in 2005. His journey with the national side was not without hardship. For years, he faced criticism at home after a string of near-misses in major tournaments, including Copa América and FIFA World Cup finals.
However, perseverance ultimately defined his legacy. Messi silenced doubters by leading Argentina to Copa América glory in 2021, ending a 28-year trophy drought for the nation. The crowning moment came in 2022, when he captained the team to FIFA World Cup victory in Qatar — cementing his place among football’s greatest legends.
Ironically, Spain went on to win the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships during the era when Messi could have been part of their squad. Yet the Argentine superstar has made it clear he holds no regrets.
For Messi, international football was about identity, pride, and honoring his roots — not simply collecting medals. His choice to stay loyal to Argentina ultimately shaped one of the most remarkable stories in sporting history.
In the end, turning down Spain was not a sacrifice, but a declaration of who he truly was.
