Mikel Obi Reveals What Really Caused Chelsea to Miss Out on Signing Victor Osimhen
Mikel Obi, former Super Eagles midfielder and ex-Chelsea player, has clarified why Victor Osimhen’s potential move to Chelsea fell through, despite an agreement being close. Contrary to reports suggesting Osimhen’s wage demands were the issue, Mikel revealed that the transfer was nearly completed but faced last-minute complications.
During the final hours of the summer transfer window, Chelsea made a last-ditch effort to sign the Napoli striker. Although Napoli had accepted an €80 million offer from Saudi Pro League team Al Ahli on deadline day, Osimhen hesitated about leaving European football.
Mikel, who was involved in the negotiations, shared on The Obi One Podcast that the deal was just “hours away” from finalization but ultimately failed due to unresolved issues such as paperwork and medical examinations. Despite the setback, Mikel praised both Chelsea’s ambition and Osimhen’s desire to join the club.
“Victor was disappointed when the deal didn’t go through,” Mikel said. “I spoke with him after the transfer window closed, reassured him, and advised him to stay focused and keep working hard.”
Mikel described Osimhen as a resilient player with a strong character, comparable to Didier Drogba and Diego Costa—traits that Chelsea could use. He also dismissed rumors of friction between Osimhen and Chelsea over the failed transfer.
“There are no lingering issues. If the transfer is revisited in January or next summer, it’s just a matter of finalizing a few details,” Mikel added. “Both the club and Victor are on good terms, and I’m committed to seeing this move happen because I believe he is one of the best strikers in the world and can greatly benefit Chelsea.”
Since then, Osimhen has joined Galatasaray on a season-long loan.
