Mixed Reactions in Rivers as Fubara’s Return Nears

As Rivers State braces for the much-anticipated return of Governor Siminalayi Fubara after weeks of political turbulence, the atmosphere in Port Harcourt and beyond remains charged with mixed emotions.

For many of his supporters, Fubara’s return is seen as a beacon of hope and a chance to stabilize a state that has witnessed heightened political tension in recent months. They believe his presence will signal continuity in governance and bring renewed focus to projects that have stalled amid the uncertainty.

“I’m confident that once the governor steps back fully into the public space, things will normalize,” said Chinyere Okoro, a resident of Port Harcourt. “We need him to redirect attention to development, not endless political fights.”

But not everyone shares the optimism. Among some political groups and residents, there are concerns that Fubara’s return could rekindle disputes with rival factions, deepening the rift in the state’s fragile political landscape. The recent disagreements between loyalists of the governor and other political heavyweights have left many wary of renewed confrontation.

“We’ve seen Rivers State burn from political rivalries before,” cautioned Tonye Briggs, a community leader in Degema. “Unless there is genuine reconciliation, his return may only open old wounds.”

The split in perception underscores the deep divisions that have shaped Rivers politics for years. Analysts note that the reception Fubara receives upon his return could set the tone for the months ahead, especially as the state navigates its role in national politics and prepares for upcoming political contests.

Meanwhile, civil society groups are urging restraint, calling on both government officials and citizens to prioritize peace and dialogue. “Rivers cannot afford another cycle of crisis,” warned the Coalition for Peace and Justice in a statement. “The governor’s return should be an opportunity to unite, not divide.”

As the countdown continues, all eyes remain fixed on Rivers State. Whether Fubara’s return will ease tensions or heighten them is a question only time will answer, but one thing is certain: the state stands at a piv

otal crossroads.
