My Landlord Sold His House Before My Rent Expired – What Are My Rights?
My Landlord Sold His House Before My Rent Expired – What Are My Rights?

Lagos
I currently rent a self-contained apartment in Lagos, with my tenancy set to run until the end of October this year. However, I was recently informed that the property has been sold.
Here’s what has happened so far:
I was issued a 3-month notice to vacate the property.
Along with the notice, I was given a partial refund of my rent – half the amount – without any prior discussion or my consent.
I never agreed to end my tenancy early, and I certainly didn’t request or approve any refund. It feels like I’m being pushed out of my home before the agreed rental period ends, and it’s quite upsetting.
I need legal guidance on the following:
1. Is this legal under Lagos tenancy law?
2. Does the sale of the house give the new owner or the previous landlord the right to force me out before my tenancy expires?
3. What can I do if I choose to stay until my rent officially runs out in October?
I’ve heard that once rent is paid and acknowledged, even a new property owner must honor the existing tenancy agreement. Is this accurate?
I’d truly appreciate input from lawyers or anyone well-versed in Lagos tenancy laws. I don’t want to be intimidated or unfairly evicted, especially since 3 months isn’t enough time for me to secure a new place.
