Napoli Transfers Osimhen’s Number 9 to Lukaku Amid Transfer Controversies

Napoli has transferred Victor Osimhen’s cherished number 9 jersey to their new signing, Romelu Lukaku, following a turbulent summer of transfer rumors and a reported clash with the club’s management.

Osimhen, who was instrumental in Napoli’s first Serie A title in 40 years, found himself at the center of transfer speculation, with interest from several top clubs. Despite last-minute offers from Saudi Arabian team Al-Hilal and Chelsea, Osimhen remains with Napoli, leaving many fans and analysts perplexed.
New Napoli manager Antonio Conte, who previously worked with Lukaku at Inter Milan, seems to favor the Belgian striker, which has influenced the decision to reassign the number 9 shirt. Conte’s preference for Lukaku is a significant factor in this development.
Negotiations between Napoli and Saudi club Al Ahli for Osimhen reportedly stalled over a fee, leading Al Ahli to pivot towards Brentford’s Ivan Toney, whom they acquired for £40 million. Toney’s acquisition was completed swiftly compared to the protracted talks with Napoli.
Osimhen’s future at Napoli now appears uncertain, with speculation that he might be sidelined until January, when the next transfer window opens. This follows a year in which Osimhen was named African Footballer of the Year and placed 8th in the Ballon d’Or rankings.
The strained relationship between Osimhen and Napoli has been evident, especially after a controversial TikTok video posted by the club’s official account. Despite these issues, Osimhen has signed a contract extension with Napoli until 2026.
