Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule Criticizes Protesters for Playing Almajiris’ Role in Recent Protests
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has called on northern leaders to address regional challenges, noting that many of the protesters during the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations were Almajiris who did not understand the purpose of the rallies.
The #EndBadGovernance protests, which began on August 1 across various cities in Nigeria to advocate for economic improvements, started peacefully but escalated into violence and looting in some northern states, leading to curfews.
Governor Sule expressed concern over the involvement of young Almajiris in the protests, many of whom were as young as five years old. He revealed on Channels Television’s Politics Today that these children often did not grasp the significance of the demonstrations. “During the recent protest in Lafia, most participants were Almajiris who, when questioned, were unaware of what they were protesting against,” he said.
Sule highlighted the urgent need to address illiteracy in the north, emphasizing that the protests should serve as a wake-up call for regional leaders. He criticized previous efforts to address the Almajiri issue, noting that past initiatives had failed and calling for renewed action. “We must tackle these issues seriously. The protests reveal a critical need for educational and economic reforms,” he added.
Governor Sule stressed that without proper education and economic opportunities, the Almajiris and similar groups are likely to continue engaging in disruptive behavior. He urged northern leaders to prioritize education and work collaboratively to resolve these pressing issues.
