NCAA Says AGF and Police Will Decide What Happens to Kwam1 After His Apology
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on Friday confirmed that the ultimate decision regarding fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde, also known as K1 De Ultimate or KWAM 1, rests with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Inspector General of Police (IG), following petitions filed against him.
NCAA’s spokesperson, Michael Achimugu, made this known in an interview with Saturday Beats after KWAM1 issued a public apology for his involvement in a contentious incident with ValueJet Airline officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport’s domestic terminal in Abuja on August 5, 2025.
In a statement personally signed and released to Saturday Beats, KWAM1 described the event as “regrettable” and emphasized that he never intended to disrupt airport operations or breach any aviation rules.
A video of the confrontation, which surfaced online on Wednesday, showed the singer apparently blocking the plane’s departure, sparking widespread criticism. The Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, alongside the NCAA, responded by imposing a six-month flying ban on KWAM1. Additionally, the pilots involved were suspended pending investigation.
Earlier on Thursday, the NCAA confirmed it had formally petitioned the AGF and the IG, calling for a thorough investigation and prosecution of the musician.
Despite KWAM1’s apology released in a video on Friday afternoon, NCAA’s Achimugu said he was yet to review the statement. He reiterated that NCAA does not have prosecutorial powers and had referred the matter to the relevant authorities for further action.
Minister Keyamo told Saturday Beats that although he had seen the apology on social media, the issue still required formal consideration before any decision could be reached.
When asked if the police had received the NCAA’s petition, Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi said he would check and respond but had not gotten back by the time of this report. Attempts to obtain a reaction from the AGF were also unsuccessful.
In his public apology, KWAM1 explained that the incident at the airport was unfortunate and clarified that he carries a water flask due to chronic dehydration, a medical condition he is managing. He denied allegations that the flask contained alcohol, stating it was filled only with water, which could be confirmed by CCTV footage at the airport lounge.
The acclaimed singer reiterated his patriotism and dedication to promoting Nigeria globally through his music, expressing deep regret for the episode. He apologized sincerely to the Presidency, Ministry of Aviation, FAAAN, NCAA, ValueJet, Nigerians, and his fans worldwide for any distress caused.
The controversy stemmed from viral footage showing KWAM1 obstructing a ValueJet plane on the runway, nearly risking a dangerous accident when the aircraft moved forward, forcing him to duck to avoid injury.
