NCC Revokes Press Statement on Starlink Operations

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has retracted its recent press statement concerning Starlink, the satellite internet provider.
In a communication sent to media outlets on Tuesday, the NCC admitted that the statement was issued by mistake and requested that editors and journalists withdraw any associated articles.
“Please be informed that the press statement regarding Starlink was issued in error and is hereby WITHDRAWN. If it has been published, we kindly ask you to REMOVE it,” the notice, signed by Kunle Azeez, the NCC’s Manager of Media Relations, stated.
The NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, had previously indicated that the commission planned to take action against Starlink for raising subscription fees in Nigeria without the necessary approval.
In a recent message to its customers, Starlink announced that the price increase would apply to both existing and new users. Additionally, the cost for the Starlink kit required for installation has risen to N590,000, reflecting a 34% increase from the prior price of N440,000.
However, the NCC clarified that it did not authorize this price hike. “Starlink’s decision to increase subscription fees without our consent was unexpected,” Muoka stated, noting that the company had submitted a request for a price adjustment that the NCC had not yet approved.
