New Era at INEC: Senate Approves Joash Amupitan as Chairman

Published by on October 16th, 2025.

Professor Amupitan, a renowned legal scholar and administrator, brings to the commission decades of experience in academia, governance, and public policy. His appointment, according to political observers, reflects a deliberate attempt by the federal government to strengthen INEC’s institutional integrity and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.

During his screening, the new INEC boss emphasized his commitment to building on the achievements of his predecessors while introducing innovative strategies to tackle lingering challenges such as voter apathy, logistics inefficiencies, and the influence of money in politics. He pledged to uphold the independence of the commission, ensure timely deployment of election materials, and promote the use of technology in electoral management.

“INEC must not only be independent in name but in action,” Amupitan said. “Our democracy can only thrive when the people trust the process that produces their leaders.”

Lawmakers across party lines commended his vision and depth of understanding of Nigeria’s electoral framework, expressing optimism that his leadership would mark a turning point in the nation’s quest for credible elections.

Public reactions have also been largely positive. Civil society organizations, advocacy groups, and electoral stakeholders have called on Professor Amupitan to prioritize institutional reforms, staff capacity development, and collaboration with stakeholders to deepen democratic culture at all levels.

As the 2027 general elections draw closer, the task before the new INEC chairman is enormous. Expectations are high, and Nigerians are hopeful that his tenure will not only sustain recent improvements in electoral conduct but also set new standards of excellence, fairness, and accountability.

With Professor Joash Amupitan now at the helm, many believe a new chapter has begun — one that could redefine Nigeria’s democratic future and reaffirm the people’s faith in the power

of their votes.
