New PDP Acting National Chairman Commits to NEC Meeting on October 24; North Central to Submit Natl Chairman Nominee

Ahmed Yayari Mohammed, the newly appointed Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has pledged to take swift action by convening the long-awaited National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on October 24, 2024.
In a show of support, opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives praised his immediate focus on reform. During his acceptance speech on Sunday, Mohammed emphasized that the North-Central zone, responsible for nominating a successor to the former National Chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, should urgently submit its nominee for NEC approval.
He affirmed that his leadership of the National Working Committee (NWC) would adhere strictly to the party’s constitution, with a commitment to restore member confidence by facilitating the overdue NEC meeting. Mohammed expressed his intention to treat all members fairly, regardless of their status, to foster loyalty and commitment within the party.
Reflecting on recent challenges, he stated, “The current dynamics within our party necessitate a serious reassessment of our management, particularly as we fulfill our role as an opposition party.” He acknowledged past shortcomings in meeting the expectations of an effective opposition and called for unity and a return to the founding principles of equity and justice.
The NWC appointed him on October 10, 2024, with the aim of revitalizing the party and addressing the aspirations of its members, especially the youth. Mohammed stressed the importance of collaboration among party leaders, including the PDP Governors’ Forum and the Board of Trustees, to ensure a successful NEC meeting.
In response, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, spokesperson for the opposition coalition, commended Mohammed for his decisive leadership and immediate reforms, highlighting the renewed hope among party members. Ugochinyere expressed confidence that Mohammed’s leadership would enhance stability and cooperation within the PDP, essential for the party’s prospects in the 2027 elections.
As Mohammed embarks on his new role, the focus will be on overcoming internal challenges and presenting a united front to reclaim the party’s status as a leading political force in Nigeria.
