NFF Weighs $100,000 Monthly Deal for Chelle Amid Contract Standoff

NFF Weighs $100,000 Monthly Deal for Chelle Amid Contract Standoff

The Nigeria Football Federation is reportedly preparing an improved contract offer for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, as negotiations over his future intensify.

Sources within the federation indicate that the proposed deal would see Chelle earn up to $100,000 monthly double his current salary but still short of the $130,000 figure the coach is said to be demanding. According to The Punch, the NFF is willing to adjust his contract terms but remains firm on not exceeding the $100,000 threshold.

A senior official familiar with the discussions disclosed that both the Federal Government and football authorities are keen on maintaining stability within the national team setup. However, the source emphasized that the federation expects some compromise from the coach if a deal is to be reached.

Chelle, who currently earns $50,000 per month, has justified his request for a higher wage, explaining that the proposed figure is not solely for personal earnings but also intended to cover salaries of his backroom staff and improve overall working conditions.

Speaking in a recent interview monitored by The Guardian, the coach clarified that managing national teams in Africa often requires head coaches to shoulder financial responsibility for their technical crew. He added that the increased package would enable him to build a more efficient and competitive setup.

Despite the ongoing talks, federation insiders suggest that negotiations could collapse if both parties fail to reach a middle ground. In such a scenario, the NFF is reportedly prepared to explore alternative options, including hiring another foreign coach.

According to The Nation, the possibility of appointing a local coach has been ruled out for now, with the federation believed to favor continuity in its strategy of engaging foreign tacticians.

Chelle has, however, dismissed speculation linking him with an imminent departure, maintaining that he remains committed to his role with the Super Eagles. He noted that he still has a year left on his current contract and is actively working with his technical team, including preparations for upcoming international fixtures.

The coach is also expected to unveil his squad list ahead of Nigeria’s next set of friendly matches during the upcoming FIFA window, even as uncertainty lingers over the outcome of his contract negotiations.
