The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Western Marine Command, has successfully intercepted 53 bags of cannabis sativa, totaling 1,958kg, with a duty-paid value of ₦398 million in Lagos.
Major Operation at Ilase Sea Beach
Lomba Benjamin, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, reported that the seizure took place on Thursday, February 20, at around 11:00 PM at Ilase Sea Beach, located approximately 200 nautical miles from the Lagos Anchorage.
According to Customs Area Controller, Paul Bamisaiye, the smugglers attempted to flee by abandoning their boat and jumping into the sea when intercepted by the officers. The boat was secured and brought back to the office, where it was found to contain 3,793 loaves of cannabis packed into 53 sacks, totaling 1,958kg. The seized goods were valued at ₦398 million.
Record Seizure Under Bamisaiye’s Leadership
Bamisaiye labeled the operation as the largest single cannabis seizure under his leadership, highlighting the dedication and alertness of his officers in combating drug trafficking. He also recalled a similar interception two months prior, when 15 sacks containing 1,021 loaves of cannabis, weighing 538kg and valued at ₦107 million, were seized.
Transfer to NDLEA for Further Action
As per standard protocol, the confiscated drugs will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and eventual destruction. Bamisaiye reiterated the NCS’s commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to safeguard the nation’s borders and fight against the smuggling of illegal substances.
