Nigeria Declares Seven Days of National Mourning for Former President Muhammadu Buhari

Muhhamadu Buhari
Nigeria is in mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a key figure in the country’s modern history. Buhari passed away in London yesterday at the age of 82.
Recognized for his austere lifestyle, military discipline, and strong anti-corruption principles, Buhari’s path from military ruler in the 1980s to elected democratic leader remains a rare political journey. His leadership stirred both admiration and controversy, making him a defining figure in Nigeria’s political evolution.
His passing signals the close of a significant chapter—one marked by firm leadership, bold reforms, and enduring debates about his legacy. To some, Buhari symbolized authority and integrity; to others, a divisive figure. But few would deny his lasting impact on the country.
Tributes are pouring in from across the globe, as political figures, citizens, and international observers reflect on his complex legacy. Just weeks ago, Buhari had travelled abroad aboard a private jet, reportedly for a routine medical examination. While early reports suggested he was stable enough to go sightseeing, his condition worsened, leading to his transfer to an intensive care unit.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, acting on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, visited Buhari during his final days. Ultimately, he was moved to a care facility where he passed away.
The severity of Buhari’s health became more evident last week when his longtime spokesman, Garba Shehu, asked Nigerians to pray for him during a public event. Yesterday, Shehu released a brief but emotional confirmation of the former president’s death:
“INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIR RAJI’UN. The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a London clinic. May Allah grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”
In a personal message, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow at the loss of his predecessor:
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Excellency, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), GCFR, today, Sunday, July 13, 2025, in the United Kingdom. A true patriot, soldier, and statesman, Buhari served Nigeria with unwavering commitment—first as Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and later as President from 2015 to 2023.”
Tinubu praised Buhari’s steadfast dedication to national unity, his unrelenting fight against corruption, and his emphasis on discipline in public service.
“In honour of his legacy, I have ordered all national flags to fly at half-mast for seven days beginning today. An emergency Federal Executive Council meeting will also be held Tuesday in his honour. He will be accorded full state honours,” Tinubu added.
Buhari’s remains are expected to be laid to rest today in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, with full military honours befitting a former Commander-in-Chief.
News of his death sent shockwaves across the nation. Major media outlets suspended regular programming to air special coverage and documentaries on his life and times, while social media was flooded with reactions from citizens and public figures alike.
As the country grieves, the focus now turns to remembrance—a time to reflect on a life shaped by duty, conviction, and complex leadership.
