Nigeria to Install Satellite for Solid Minerals Nationwide Surveillance

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the procurement and installation of satellite surveillance systems for the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development across Nigeria, according to reports from The Bureau Newspaper.
Sources within the Ministry indicate that the goal of this initiative is to monitor and secure mineral sites, addressing the challenges posed by illegal and unregulated mining practices.
Tackling Revenue Loss and Illegal Mining
Investigations by The Bureau Newspaper reveal that the lack of effective policies and monitoring has led to:
1. Loss of revenue due to unregulated mining operations.
2. Illegal mining activities conducted by both local and foreign entities.
3. The smuggling and misreporting of Nigeria’s mineral resources.
Government’s Approach: From Incentives to Enforcement
Reports suggest that the government had previously encouraged illegal miners to form cooperative groups as a means of legalizing their operations. This strategy has led to:
1. The establishment of over 300 registered cooperative societies, contributing to the national economy.
2. However, sources confirm that those who continue to operate illegally will face strict enforcement measures under the newly approved plan by the FEC.
Leveraging Technology for Effective Oversight
Despite previous crackdowns, including arrests, prosecutions, and convictions of illegal miners, including foreign nationals, sources tell The Bureau Newspaper that the Ministry believes advanced technological solutions are key to ensuring better enforcement.
With the approval of satellite surveillance, authorities will implement real-time monitoring systems to detect illegal mining activities and protect Nigeria’s valuable mineral resources.
