Nigerian Army Warns Against Social Media Misuse Fueling Insecurity

The Nigerian Army has raised alarm over the growing misuse of social media, warning that it is exacerbating insecurity in the country. Major General A.A. Ayanuga, Commander of the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, issued this caution during the 38th edition of the Nigerian Army Social Media Seminar in Lokoja, which focused on the theme: “Cultivating a Culture of Security Awareness Through Social Media.”

Ayanuga stressed that the irresponsible sharing of harmful content such as videos, messages, and voice notes on social media platforms is compromising Nigeria’s unity and safety. He highlighted the transformative influence of social media, acknowledging its power to connect people and democratize information. However, he pointed out that this power comes with significant risks, including the spread of misinformation, cyberbullying, hate speech, and online harassment, all of which have the potential to destabilize national security.

“Social media has become a powerful tool that can shape public opinion and influence security dynamics worldwide,” Ayanuga said. “While it offers vast opportunities for self-expression and cross-border communication, the dangers of misuse—such as spreading harmful narratives—are real and can have serious repercussions for national security.”

The Nigerian Army’s Chief of Civil Military Affairs, Major General N.C. Ugbo, who was represented by B.S. Keji, echoed these concerns, emphasizing that social media is now a critical component of modern asymmetric warfare. He urged the public to be mindful of social media’s role in shaping national discourse and public perception.

“Social media is a double-edged sword,” Ugbo said. “It has immense potential to foster collaboration and national unity, but it can also be a tool for division and misinformation. Our goal is to find ways to harness its positive potential while actively countering disinformation and promoting unity.”

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Ododo, represented by the State Security Adviser Commodore Jerry Omodara, also acknowledged the dual nature of social media. While praising its ability to disseminate important information, Omodara warned that it can equally be used to spread falsehoods and sow discord, which can destabilize the nation.

“Social media has become a powerful force in shaping perceptions and guiding public action, especially in matters of national security,” he noted. “While it can be used to spread life-saving information, it can also fuel divisions and escalate tensions, leading to severe consequences for the stability of our communities.”

Omodara concluded by stressing that security awareness is a collective responsibility. He called for ongoing education and collaboration across all sectors to equip Nigerians, especially the youth, with the tools to discern credible information and contribute positively to national security.

“We must instill a culture of security awareness, where citizens understand their role in safeguarding peace and stability within their communities,” he said. “In an increasingly connected world, the responsibility of maintaining security now extends to all of us, both online and offline.”
