The Nigeria Police Force in Abuja has raised alarm over the increasing number of abandoned babies in the Federal Capital Territory, attributing the rise largely to men who neglect their responsibilities after impregnating women.
In a statement issued by police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, on Sunday, two more cases of abandoned babies were reported the previous day. This worrying trend is not confined to Abuja but is being observed across the country.
Abandoning children is a global issue, with an estimated 140 million orphans worldwide, and many more children suffering from abandonment or neglect.
SP Adeh called on men to take responsibility for their actions, stressing the importance of avoiding unprotected sex or abstaining entirely if they are not prepared for fatherhood. She emphasized that this proactive approach is essential to preventing child abandonment and ensuring the well-being of children.
“The rising number of abandoned babies in the FCT is deeply concerning. Just yesterday, we recorded two more cases,” Adeh said. “This issue is largely driven by men abandoning women after they become pregnant. If you’re not ready for fatherhood, it’s important to avoid unprotected sex or abstain altogether.”
She also called for stronger legal frameworks to protect children’s rights and prevent further cases of abandonment.
