Nurses Call for Justice: Strike Suspension Hinges on Key Demands

The Nigerian nurses’ union, National Association of #Nigerian #Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), has emphasized that their key demands must be met before they consider suspending their ongoing strike. The seven-day warning strike, which began on July 29, 2025, is aimed at protesting poor pay, severe staff shortages, unpaid allowances, and unsafe working conditions.
The key demands of the nurses include the official publication of their professional scheme of service, implementation of a 2012 court ruling concerning their welfare, increased professional allowances, mass recruitment of nurses, inclusion in hospital boards and policy-making bodies, creation of a Department of Nursing at the Federal Ministry of Health, centralized posting system for intern nurses, and granting of consultancy status to qualified professionals.
If these demands are not met within the seven-day warning strike period, #NANNM has threatened to issue a 21-day ultimatum before embarking on an indefinite strike. The strike has already affected healthcare services across federal hospitals, and it is the first nationwide strike by nurses in over 40 years.
