Obi of Onitsha Criticizes Tinubu’s Economic Policies Amidst Declining Nigerian Well-Being

The Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Achebe, has voiced serious concerns about the declining well-being of Nigerians, attributing this deterioration to the economic reforms enacted by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

During the 2024 Ofala Festival celebration in Onitsha on Friday, Achebe highlighted the increasing insecurity and economic struggles affecting the nation. The festival, which focused on themes of “Courage, Perseverance, Self-Reliance,” provided a platform for him to encourage citizens to remain resilient in the face of adversity.

Achebe remarked, “In the past year, the well-being of our people has sharply declined, culminating in a nationwide protest in August 2024, known as #EndBadGovernance. The primary issues of concern are the economy and security.”

He elaborated on the detrimental effects of these challenges, noting the rising cost of living, business closures, increasing unemployment, and a growing sense of hopelessness and distrust in government.

Despite Tinubu’s confidence in his policies, Achebe criticized the significant rise in petrol prices and the declining value of the naira.

He urged the President to seek alternative approaches and promptly organize a non-partisan national summit focused on economic and security issues, fostering collaboration to address the country’s urgent problems.

Additionally, Achebe condemned the rampant violence and property damage caused by unidentified gunmen in the South-East, pointing out the inadequate response from authorities. He stated, “In the South-East, we continue to suffer from the unyielding attacks by unknown gunmen who kill, maim, and kidnap our people for ransom. The closure of schools, markets, and public facilities on Mondays inflicts heavy economic and social burdens on the Ndigbo community.”

Noting the disturbing rise in armed violence, Achebe pointed out a marked increase in such incidents in August 2024. He expressed worry over insufficient funding for local vigilante groups, which he considers essential for effectively addressing these security challenges.
