Obi Urges ADC to Zone 2027 Presidential Ticket to the South for National Balance

Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s flagbearer in the 2023 presidential election, has called on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to allocate its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, emphasizing the importance of fairness, national unity, and cohesion.

Obi made the call during a recent event in Ilọrin — the second Annual Colloquium in honor of Associate Professor Abdulmumin Yinka Ajia, a former governorship contender under the APC in Kwara State.

This comes in the wake of a coalition of opposition groups, fronted by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, endorsing the ADC as a unifying platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. The coalition also appointed former Senate President David Mark and ex-Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola as interim national chairman and secretary of the party, respectively.

Although Atiku is reportedly interested in clinching the ADC ticket, both Obi and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi—key figures within the coalition—have pledged to serve a single four-year term if elected.

Speaking through Dr. Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator of the Obidients Movement, Obi argued that allowing a Southerner to lead in 2027 would reinforce a sense of inclusion and stability in the country.

“Why must we return the presidency to the North when the South still has unfinished business? Let’s give the South a chance to complete its tenure. After that, our Northern brothers can rightfully take their turn,” Obi stated.

He further warned the coalition against repeating past political missteps, citing the controversy surrounding the late Moshood Abiola’s presidential bid.

Dr. Yunusa affirmed Obi’s determination to run in 2027, regardless of whether he secures the coalition’s endorsement. “Obi is not waiting on anyone’s decision to declare his candidacy. He’s ready, and when the time comes, the right platform will be revealed,” he concluded.
