Ohanaeze Reacts to Involvement in Call for Fubara’s Impeachment

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading socio-cultural group for the Igbo people, has rejected claims that it urged the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In a statement clarifying the matter, the organization stressed that it had not taken any official stance regarding the ongoing political issues in Rivers State and emphasized that the report in question did not originate from Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

However, a faction within Ohanaeze called for Speaker Amaewhule to begin impeachment proceedings against Fubara following the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which reinstated the lawmakers previously dismissed by the governor, including Amaewhule himself.

The faction’s call for impeachment was attributed to the Deputy President-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Publicity Secretary, Chief Chinenyeze Ohia.

In response to the controversy, Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s Secretary-General, Ezechi Chukwu, told Punch on Saturday that the statement calling for Fubara’s impeachment did not come from the organization.

“That statement did not come from us. We have no knowledge of it, and we have no position on the issue. We are not involved in it,” Chukwu stated. “We urge the public and media to be cautious about their sources and to verify any information carefully.”

The political situation in Rivers State has become more tense after the Supreme Court’s decision, with Amaewhule’s faction now strengthening its hold over the state legislature.
