Ooni of Ife Reacts to the Appointment of New Alaafin-Elect

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has expressed his support for the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin-elect of Oyo. In his congratulatory message, he celebrated the selection of Owoade as the new guardian of Oyo’s rich cultural heritage.

This statement was made public on Saturday by Otunba Moses Olafare, Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Oba Ogunwusi praised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for fostering a conducive environment that facilitated a seamless transition, leading to the emergence of a new king for Oyo.

He also commended the kingmakers, royal families, and the people of Oyo for their patience and maturity throughout the lengthy, two-year selection process. Ogunwusi emphasized that this transition signals a promising new chapter for Oyo, one that promises prosperity, unity, and the preservation of its rich cultural heritage.

He highlighted the historical bond between Oyo and Ile-Ife, a connection rooted in divine origins and cultural significance. Oyo, he remarked, remains an essential jewel in the Yoruba kingdom, with the Alaafin’s throne playing a pivotal role in Yoruba governance and tradition.

“The appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade signifies the continuation of this sacred link and the enduring strength of the Yoruba cultural legacy,” Ogunwusi said.

The Ooni further expressed confidence that the Alaafin-elect will build on the legacy of his predecessors, particularly the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, and guide the people of Oyo with wisdom and unity.

“Now that you have ascended, you must unite all, including those who supported and those who opposed you. The growth of Oyo depends on collective effort, and you must ensure that the Oyomesi remains united under your reign. Your victory demands magnanimity and a commitment to peace, fairness, and justice,” Ogunwusi advised.

He concluded by encouraging the people of Oyo, from all corners of the land, to support the new Alaafin and work together to uphold and advance the glory of Oyo.
