Osun Lawmaker Empowers 300 Constituents with Skills and Tools for Self-Reliance
In a move aimed at promoting economic independence and grassroots development, an Osun State lawmaker has empowered 300 constituents with practical skills and work tools to enhance self-reliance and reduce unemployment within the constituency.
The empowerment programme, held at a central community venue, brought together beneficiaries drawn from different wards across the constituency. Participants were trained in various vocational skills, including tailoring, hairdressing, catering, welding, carpentry, phone repairs, and small-scale agro-processing. At the end of the training, beneficiaries received relevant tools and starter packs to help them immediately put their new skills into practice.
Speaking at the event, the lawmaker described the initiative as part of a long-term commitment to improving the welfare of constituents and equipping them with sustainable means of livelihood. According to the lawmaker, true empowerment goes beyond handouts and focuses on providing people with the capacity to earn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to society.
“This programme is about creating opportunities and restoring dignity through work,” the lawmaker said. “When people have skills and the right tools, they are empowered to take control of their future, support their families, and strengthen the local economy.”
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting that the training and equipment would significantly improve their income prospects. Many described the programme as timely, especially in the face of economic challenges, and pledged to make good use of the opportunity.
Community leaders and stakeholders who attended the event commended the lawmaker for prioritizing human capital development. They noted that skill-based empowerment not only reduces dependency but also helps curb social vices by engaging youths and women in productive ventures.
The empowerment programme is expected to have a ripple effect across the constituency, as beneficiaries create jobs, mentor others, and contribute to local economic growth. The lawmaker assured constituents that more initiatives focused on education, youth development, and social welfare would follow.
With this intervention, the Osun lawmaker has reinforced the idea that sustainable development begins with empowering people with the skills and resources they need to thrive independently.
