Osun Osogbo Festival:Reasons for low turnout of worshippers, tourists

The 2024 Osun Osogbo Festival, which took place on Friday, saw a disappointing turnout of worshippers and tourists due to the impact of inflation.

At the festival’s grand finale in the Isale Osun area of Osogbo, our reporter noted a sparse crowd of adherents and visitors. The Arugba, who carries the calabash, arrived at the Groove at approximately 11:37 am, with the king and his wives arriving around 12:30 pm.

Despite a heavy security presence, some individuals were seen carrying weapons during the festivities.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by Secretary to the State Government Teslim Igbalaye, reiterated the administration’s commitment to developing the state’s creative sector, including tourism, entertainment, and crafts. “Our focus is on reforming and expanding various economic sectors, with particular emphasis on the creative industry due to its potential for job creation and revenue generation,” Igbalaye stated.

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, highlighted the importance of preserving Yoruba cultural identity through traditional practices. He urged traditional rulers to prioritize their cultural roles over political ones. “Traditional rulers must maintain our cultural heritage and support the Yoruba identity in their communities,” Adams said.
