Oyetola’s Team Arrives in Bayelsa to Finalize $3bn Agge Seaport Project Talks

Efforts to enhance Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and alleviate congestion at the nation’s ports are progressing with plans to finalize the development of a deep sea port in Agge, located in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
This $3 billion project, a collaborative Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative, involves the Bayelsa State government, the federal government, and a prominent private investor.
The proposed deep seaport aims to boost employment opportunities, stimulate local economic growth, attract investments, and establish Bayelsa as a key transportation hub for northern and southeastern Nigeria.
According to sources from the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, a Project Delivery Team has arrived in Bayelsa to work in close coordination with the state government to finalize plans for the project’s launch.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving port infrastructure and connectivity, highlighting the ongoing efforts to advance critical maritime infrastructure projects across the country. The team, on the minister’s directive, is in Bayelsa to accelerate the project’s implementation.
Governor of Bayelsa, during a recent visit to the Minister in Abuja, had urged the federal government’s support for the Agge seaport, recognizing its potential to tap into the state’s blue economy. Oyetola, acknowledging the state’s maritime potential, confirmed that the PPP model would be key to completing the ambitious project.
The Ministry is also focusing on attracting private sector and foreign investments to further develop Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure, positioning the country as a leader in the global maritime industry.
Upon completion, the Agge deep seaport project is expected to bring substantial investment to Bayelsa, solidifying its status as a critical maritime hub in the region. The PPP approach may also be applied to other proposed deep seaport developments across the country.
