Paul Okoye Fires Back at Critic Over Debate on Men Claiming to Be Broke

Nigerian singer Paul Okoye has responded strongly to a social media user who questioned why many men claim to be financially broke despite not spending as much on their appearance as women.
The debate began after a Nigerian woman online challenged men who frequently say they have little money, arguing that they do not invest heavily in personal grooming and beauty routines compared with women, who often spend significant amounts on hair, makeup, clothing and other fashion-related needs.
Reacting to the comment, Okoye dismissed the argument and criticised the comparison, insisting that such reasoning ignores the broader financial responsibilities many men carry. In his response, the singer used the phrase “ewu atulu,” a slang expression often used to show strong disapproval, while pushing back against the suggestion that men cannot claim financial strain.
Okoye argued that being financially stretched cannot be measured solely by how much individuals spend on personal appearance. According to him, many men face different kinds of financial pressures that may not always be visible in discussions focused only on lifestyle spending.
The exchange quickly sparked reactions across social media platforms, with users weighing in on both sides of the conversation. Some supported the singer’s stance, saying that financial obligations such as family support, bills and business commitments often place heavy demands on men. Others maintained that the original question reflected broader conversations about spending habits and financial priorities between men and women.
The discussion has since grown into a wider online debate about money, gender expectations and the differing financial realities faced by many people.
