PDP Criticizes President Tinubu’s Media Statements, Accuses APC of Disconnect from Nigerians
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted strongly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s comments during his media chat on Monday, accusing him of further demonstrating the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government’s disregard for the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians.
In the media interview, President Tinubu defended his administration’s policies, claiming they were already yielding positive outcomes. He also reiterated his commitment to tax reforms and the removal of fuel subsidies, stating that there would be no reversal on these decisions. Additionally, the president dismissed calls to reduce the size of his cabinet, asserting that he was not considering any downsizing despite growing public demand to reduce government expenditure.
However, the PDP, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, strongly criticized the president’s remarks, claiming they reflected a deep disconnect between the government and the realities faced by Nigerians. The party argued that the “poorly executed and harmful policies” of the APC were causing severe difficulties for the people, and accused President Tinubu of being out of touch with the nation’s struggles.
The PDP also took issue with the president’s assertion that Nigerians could now travel freely and safely by road, pointing to ongoing issues with banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery, as well as the deteriorating state of the country’s highways under APC leadership. The opposition party urged the president to experience the situation firsthand by traveling from Abuja to Lagos by road, visiting local markets, or walking through the streets of any Nigerian city.
“Rather than relying on misleading government statistics, we challenge the president to engage directly with the suffering citizens to fully understand the challenges they face,” the PDP statement read.
The party also highlighted the recent food-related stampedes in various regions, which led to the deaths of around 80 people, as a stark example of the dire conditions Nigerians are enduring under the current administration.
At the time of writing, APC national publicity secretary Barrister Felix Morka could not be reached for comment.
